Ice‐Front Retreat Controls on Ocean Dynamics Under Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctica

چکیده
Abstract Iceberg A‐68 separated from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in July 2017 and impact of this event on local ocean circulation has yet to be assessed. Here, we conduct numerical simulations dynamics near below ice shelf pre‐ post‐calving. Results agree with situ remote observations area as they indicate that basal melt is primarily controlled by wintertime sea‐ice formation, which turn produces High Salinity Water (HSSW). After calving event, simulate a 50% increase HSSW intrusion under shelf, enhancing heat delivery 30%. This results doubling rate Gipps Rise, suggesting positive feedback for further retreat could destabilize Shelf. Assessing ice‐front crucial better understand ice‐shelf warming environment.

Present stability of the Larsen C ice shelf, Antarctic Peninsula
We modelled the flow of the Larsen C and northernmost Larsen D ice shelves, Antarctic Peninsula, using a model of continuum mechanics of ice flow, and applied a fracture criterion to the simulated velocities to investigate the ice shelf’s present-day stability. Constraints come from satellite data and geophysical measurements from the 2008/09 austral summer. Ice-shelf thickness was derived from...

Melt water from the floating ice shelves at the margins of the southeastern Weddell Sea makes a significant contribution to the fresh water budget of the region. In February 2005 a multi-institution team conducted an oceanographic campaign at Fimbul Ice Shelf on the Greenwich Meridian as part of the Autosub Under Ice programme. This included a mission of the autonomous submarine Autosub 25 km i...
متن کاملOcean mixing beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica
Ice shelves around Antarctica are vulnerable to an increase in ocean-driven melting, with the melt rate depending on ocean temperature and the strength of flow inside the ice-shelf cavities. We present measurements of velocity, temperature, salinity, turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, and thermal variance dissipation rate beneath Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, West Antarctica. These mea...
